Government may moot tougher laws for juveniles

LAW   (UNI) Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said the government might moot amending existing laws to make them tougher for juveniles who commit heinous crimes repeatedly. 'We can consider making a small amendment in the laws that if a juvenile commits heinous crimes or rapes repeatedly, then what action can be taken,' she said here. A parliamentary panel had recently suggested lowering the age bar for juveniles from 18 years to 16 years. She said she did not favour changing the present definition of a juvenile, according to which those below 18 years of age are children. UNI
