Foreign Journalists move Delhi HC seeking to allow reporting of court proceedings in gang rape case
4.5.2013 (UNI) The Foreign Journalists who were barred from reporting the December 16 gangrape case, moved the Delhi High Court seeking parity with Indian journalists.
Last month, the Delhi HC had lifted ban on media reporting the sensitive case but when a foreign correspondent went to cover the case, he was asked to leave the court.
The British Journalists covering the case were asked to leave the courtroom as the police said that only journalists from national dailies were allowed to cover the case.
Lawyer Meenakshi Lekhi, who had earlier appeared for journalists to get them the right to report, has again taken up the case of foreign correspondents seeking clarification for the High Court's earlier order in which permission was granted to journalists.
Waiel SH Awwad, president of Foreign Correspondents Press Club, has also raised this question before the Ministry here.
According to Foreign journalists, they are accredited journalists here and should be treated equally with Indian correspondents.
A 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally assaulted and gangraped in a moving bus on December 16. She later succumbed to her injuries on December 29 in a Singapore hospital.
The victim's friend who accompanied her, though survived, is suffering from multiple injuries.
Police had asked for a ban on reporting the case saying that all rape cases cannot be covered by the media.
The HC, however, lifted the ban but with a word of caution not to exceed the norms laid down while covering such cases.
The Foreign correspondents are also watching this particular case with keen interest as many issues of public safety and women issues are involved in this case. UNI
