Delhi HC grants 6 week bail to Chautala for pacemaker surgery

ch (UNI) The Delhi High Court granted interim bail for six weeks to former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala for pacemaker implant surgery at a hospital here. Justice Siddharth Mridul, after going through the medical reports of Chautala, granted the interim bail on a personal bond of Rs five lakh along with two sureties of like amount. The bail bonds will be furnished before the trial court today, Chautala's counsel said. The court also directed the leader to surrender his passport to the trial court and not leave the National Capital Region (NCR) without its permission. The Judge directed Chautala to get himself admitted at Medanta Medicity for undergoing the surgery within 24 hours of his release on bail. It also cautioned Chautala that if any condition imposed is violated by him, the CBI will have the liberty to get the interim bail cancelled. Justice Mridul, however, dismissed the CBI plea that Chautala be restrained from addressing any news conference during the period of bail, on the grounds that it cannot curtail the fundamental rights of any citizen. A medical board was constituted on May 16 to conduct a check-up on the former chief minister on the orders of the High Court. The medical board which filed its report today suggested the implantation of a pacemaker. The Indian National Lok Dal leader had approached the High Court for a suspension of his sentence, citing various ailments due to old age. The 78-year-old politician is serving a jail term for illegally recruiting JBT teachers in Haryana in 2000. UNI
